CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Marlo
I had another meeting with the city council later today after theyâd had a chance to see the plot of land I suggested for the expanded cemetery. Considering being able to speak intelligently was important to my cause, I should have been in bed by ten, getting my beauty sleep. I snorted as I layered more concealer under my eyes. Iâd never be what most people would call a beautiful woman. The most I could hope for was fascinating. At least Vander seemed to think I was interesting. I smiled at my tired reflection in the bathroom mirror, thinking back on last night under the tree. Sex with Vander had not only been fun, it had beenâ¦deep. For a guy who laughed a lot and claimed not to make real friends, heâd somehow struck a chord with me that seemed deeper than two people just messing around.
Movement out my window caught my eye and I snuck over to the side of the drapes to see Vanderâs truck leaving his property. I tapped the concealer against my palm, debating the thought that had occurred to me this morning when I woke up and stretched out my tired legs. Vander would be pissed. Somehow, knowing that made my decision for me.
I was going to have a little girl-to-girl chat with Milly while Vander was practicing with his new friends.
I hurried through the rest of my morning routine, kissing Dad on the cheek before running out the back door and jogging across the cemetery. When I reached the tree line, I slowed down, mostly because I was out of breath already. I really needed to exercise more, but the idea of joining a gym was abhorrent. All the women in tight leggings and perky asses. Overgrown men flexing in the mirror to catch the attention of the women with the assets. Iâd be over in the corner glaring at all of them until the manager kicked me out for making people uncomfortable. Best I just let myself become a decrepit, flat-assed old lady.
The doorbell clanged through the whole house when I pressed the ornate button, a gentle roll of bells that sounded stately and foreign to me. Our doorbell was literally a buzzer straight out of the seventies.
âIâm coming! Keep your shorts on!â Millyâs shaky voice came through the huge doors, along with the squeak of her walker on the tile.
âTake your time, Milly. Itâs just me, Marlo,â I called back.
The door opened a minute later, revealing Vanderâs grandma with a big smile on her face. Her track suit was bedazzled at the shoulders and she wore a stack of rings on each of her ten fingers. Milly Booth did not do casual, even with a bruised hip. âWell, what a lovely surprise this is! Come in, dear, come in.â
I stepped into Vanderâs house, feeling a lot more comfortable now than when Iâd first been here in my damn underwear. Milly led me into the parlor room and had a seat, looking like she was moving pretty good already.
